A Day in the Life

I'm lucky enough to have six weeks home with Braeden before returning to work. As much as I'd love to say I want to stay home all the time, I'm the kind of person who has to be busy all the time. Not that SAHMs aren't busy, I just need a different kind of busy. So I'm happy to return to work teaching first grade in a few weeks. We are blessed that Ben's mom is going to watch Braeden three days a week in our home. On Thursdays and Fridays, Braeden will go to a babysitter who lives in the neighborhood right next to my school and has kids that go to my school. She came highly recommended by a good friend that I trust so I'm not TOO nervous about him going there. Plus, Ben works late on Thursdays so he won't go to the babysitter until 11:00 and I'll pick him up by 4:00. Then on Fridays I'm off at 3:00. Anyway, the point of this post was to go over our loose schedule. This is what works for us. I'm not saying its perfect!

8:00-Braeden usually wakes up around this time. Diaper change and morning bottle.
8:20-9:20-Play time/Story time/Bath (If its bath day)
9:20-10:20-Morning walk around the neighborhood
10:20-11:00-Braeden usually falls asleep on the walk so when we get home I jump in the shower while he sleeps.
11:00-Bottle
11:20-2:00-He usually naps around this time, so its perfect for me to run errands. He sleeps like a rock in the car!
2:00-Bottle
2:20-5:00-Almost always is asleep at this time.
5:00-Bottle
5:00-8:00-Nap or playtime if I can keep him awake.
8:00-Bottle
8:00-10:30-We try to keep him up for a little bit at this time so that he'll sleep a little longer at night. It doesn't always work though. This time is usually daddy snuggle time.
10:30-Bedtime routine-Daddy changes B into a onesie and swaddle then gives him his bottle. I tried putting Braeden to bed one night. Didn't work. He wants daddy to do it. Seriously.

Braeden usually wakes up twice during the night, once around 2:00-2:30 and once around 5:00-5:30. He eats, burps and falls right back asleep. Ben and I switch off feedings so we actually get a decent amount of sleep. That doesn't mean we aren't looking forward to the morning where we wake up and realize he slept through the night. :)

Our Birth Story

Its been three weeks since I gave birth to our beautiful son, Braeden, so I figure its about time to post our birth story!

I was 41 weeks 3 days pregnant. I was OVER carrying around an extra 30 pounds in 100 degree heat and my OB had wanted to schedule me for an induction at 40 weeks 3 days. I wasn't dilated at all and so Cytotec would have been used to start labor. I'd heard and read horror stories about the drug and there was something or someone telling me to wait. So I cancelled that induction but was told that she would NOT let me go past 42 weeks.

Fast forward to July 25th. I was scheduled to be induced that night. Ben and I were to go in at 7:00 p.m., they'd start me on Cytotec and go from there. Cue 5:10 a.m. I had just gotten in bed after going to the bathroom for the tenth? twentieth? time that night when I felt a pop and then what I thought was me peeing myself. I jumped out of bed and waddled to the bathroom where it was obvious that my water had broken. I yelled at Ben to wake up, we called the doctor and 10 minutes later we were in Labor and Delivery at Community North.

My best friend Faithe absolutely loved her nurse, Laura Bisard, and so she was scheduled to be my nurse that night for the induction. Luckily she was there when Ben and I arrived that morning so she got us settled into my hospital room birthing suite (seriously, have you seen these rooms?). We started the Pitocin drip, fluids and Penicillin (I was Group B Strep positive), flipped on the news and texted our parents. The nurses kept telling me to sleep but I had too much adrenaline going to be able to sleep. Our parents arrived a few hours later.
Contractions were coming steadily but weren't really painful, more just uncomfortable and annoying. We tried a few positions but the most comfortable was lying on my left side, probably because that's how you have to sleep when you're preggo and I had just gotten used to it. I was dilating consistently so the Pitocin was kept to a minimum. After seven hours, I gave in and got the epidural. Contractions were tolerable but were coming so quickly I couldn't rest.

The epidural for me was the worst part. Not because of the epidural itself, but because of the spastic lady that gave it. She missed. I'll spare you the details so as not to scare off anyone from getting an epidural because let me tell you, as soon as I had it, I was on cloud nine. I could see contractions on the monitor but I sure couldn't feel them. It was wonderful. I continued to dilate and at 9:10 p.m. I was a full 10 centimeters. Time to push.

Dr. Brown was there for the delivery, not Dr. Miser, which was disappointing but she was great! Laura was my nurse and of course Ben was right there. They make you push three times for 10 seconds on every contraction. The first two pushes aren't bad but by the third, I was so out of breath it was difficult to make it worthwhile. But, after only 30 minutes of pushing, our son was born!

He had difficulty transitioning and the doctor had to quickly cut the cord. I was a little disappointed that Ben didn't get to do it, but she had to do what was in Braeden's best interest. He was having difficulty breathing and so they called in the respiratory therapist from the NICU. At this point, I'm bleeding heavily and being stitched up from tearing in three places (ouch) and wondering what in the hell is going on with my son. Luckily he spent no time in the NICU and started doing better on his own.

He weighed 10 lbs. 3 oz. and was 22 inches long. He's absolutely beautiful and the love of my life!

2012

2012 will be a year of major transition in the Ellis household. We're expecting our first baby in July. We've already started stocking up on the necessities goodies like Santa diapers, cute onesies and Nike tennis shoes.

So let's set some resolutions, shall we? I want to spend less, specifically on eating out. We have food in the house but are too lazy to cook. And since becoming pregnant, nothing will sound good and then I'll have a craving and only want to eat that. And 9x out of 10, we don't have whatever I want in the house.

My next resolution goes along with spending less, and that is to get better at searching circulars for deals and matching those up with coupons. I don't want to become the crazy coupon ladies you see on tv, but I love to save money. I think I'll use the tips from A Bowl Full of Lemons.

What else? I'd say lose weight, but with a growing baby in my tummy, that's not possible. I'll save that for after the baby is born.

Well, in honor of my resolution that won't be starting until August, I'm off to eat Keebler's version of the Samoas Girl Scout cookie! Yummmmmm

Who Am I?

Well, I am not a housewife, however, last night at dinner with our neighbors (who are thebomb.com/awesome) we decided we should have a tv show called the Housewives of Marion County and that it would probably be very dull because we are pretty normal, yet hilarious (if only to ourselves). Back to the point.

I teach first grade and have a fantastic group of hilarious 6 and 7 year olds that will be featured in some of these posts. This is my fourth year teaching but have worked in elementary schools since 2004.

I have been married to my best friend and favorite person ever since 2008 and we are expecting our first (and probably only) little nugget in July 2012.

We have four dogs, Buggsy, Abby, Minnie and Anya. They're our fur babies and yes, I know, four dogs and a baby!?! OMG...That would have been a great title for this blog. Wonder if I can change it?

Themes and Color Schemes

Baby E will be here in July. In the midwest. When the humidity will be so thick I will be a huge lump of sweat and hormones. Anyway...this means I want to have our nursery done in April or May. Of course I've already begun to plan it out. So here is what I'm thinking. No themes. As someone as OCD as myself, I will grow to despise a theme within a few months, and if our baby is anything like me, they'll grow tired of a theme just as quickly. (We've repainted our living room three times in three years.) So I've finally settled on gray and white. A light gray on the walls with the baseboards and window trim all painted white. White crib, white picture ledges from IKEA which will actually be used to display books, white frames filled with beautiful black and white images, ahhh can't you just see it? The closet will be doorless. There are built in shelves and a high hanging rod. While most of Baby E's things will be in a dresser and baskets, the shelves will be fantastic for additional storage. Once Baby E is a couple years old, I'd like to turn the closet into a little nook where s/he can snuggle up and read with mommy or play with daddy.  I also want to purchase things for the nursery that will be used for a long time. In other words, a crib that will convert into a toddler bed and a full size bed as Baby E grows up. I want a dresser that we can just put a changing pad on top of instead of a changing table. I get lots of ideas from Pinterest and IKEA is the greatest store ever. Anyway, I'll be updating my slice of the universe a couple times a week. Maybe my next post I'll introduce myself...
